Talk about exasperating.
If you thought, we’re going to get some advancement in the plot this week…Think again. Some parts cute, some parts downright aggravating, episodes 3 and 4 of romcom She Was Pretty seemed to take pleasure in torturing us. And heck, we still can’t help but suck it up.
It’s the third hour of drama and not much has changed. Hye Jin still cringes each time Ji Sung Joon so much as looks at her or speaks to her. And Sung Joon is basically still much of an ass. One good constant though…relentlessly adorable Shin Hyuk (Choi Si-Won) still gives some cheeky relief.
At a point we can’t help but wonder why Shin Hyuk gives Hye Jin so much attention. Because seriously noone else really bothers with her at work. Except to load her with tasks that is.
A new little twist is the appearance of Hye Jin’s younger sister, Hye Rin.Who looks exactly like Hye Jin did at that age. Only difference? Hye Rin is mean and shallow where Hye Jin was nice and warm.
Hearing Hye Rin call her big sister ugly was a wtf moment. I know siblings can be a trial but really?
In this episode, the two main leads spend some time socializing – just not with each other. Shin Hyuk makes Hye Jin take him out for some street food dinner. While Sung Joon rescues a drunk Ha Ri from a potential molester at a bar.
The episode cliffhanger is Hye Rin walking into the coffee bar one morning and Sung Joon catching sight of this younger Hye Jin doppelganger.
Oooops…is Kim Hye Jin’s worst kept secret about to get exposed?
Thankfully the disaster is averted. Hye Jin calls Sung Joon away on a work emergency so he doesn’t get to go too in depth with Hye Rin.
Hye Jin then sends her sister off and reminds her not to talk to strangers. There goes our hope that Sung Joon finds out the truth early in the drama.
Ha Ri is feeling guilty about spending time with Sung Joon behind Hye Jin’s back. I mean we know they keep meeting accidentally, but at what point should she decide she has to come clean? Will this somehow affect their friendship, especially as in this episode we see Ha Ri slowly warming up to Sung Joon?
In the meantime, more of our hopes get dashed. Hye Jin can’t take any more teasing from Kim Ra Ra (the very interesting character who plays the nepotic Editor in chief) and decides to make the ‘most’ of her looks in an effort to look more ‘Most-like’.
But Hye Jin’s effort at a makeover only ends up scaring everyone at work. Seriously, noone showed this girl how to use a blusher? And that lipstick. Whoa.
Tension in the drama picks up, when Hye Jin is somehow stuck with driving Sung Joon to meet a VIP client. Of course Hye Jin takes them to the wrong location. And of course Sung Joon bites her head off for it.
Even though somehow the day is saved, they both say some hard things to each other. Hye Jin is left feeling even more devastated by Sung Joon’s unfeeling attitude.
Let’s just say they were both at fault. Sung Joon was concentrating too hard on his tablet and missed Hye Jin asking him where they were headed. And Hye Jin really should have doggedly got his attention instead of shrinking from asking him anything.
Later Hye Jin gets drunk at a soju spot, and Shin Hyuk luckily happens to be around to help her home. Hye Jin drunk-calls Sung Joon and calls him some unprintable names.
For a moment, we think she’s going to blurt out the truth. She tells Sung Joon on the phone, “Hey I’m Kim Hye Jin! Kim Hye Jin!!” We almost hold our breath thinking, Sung Joon is going to definitely get the truth this time. But no. Hopes dashed again.
Back at work the next day, Hye Jin is taunted by Shin Hyuk about her drunken comments the night before. Hye Jin is panicky, but he’s only teasing. She didn’t really let anything slip, thank goodness. So Sung Joon still has no clue who she really is, yet.
Much later the editing team meet for that long awaited welcome party, which Sung Joon reluctantly attends. He’s practically forced into taking a drink but looks like he can’t hold his liquor. He literally falls flat on his face outside minutes later.
It takes both Shin Hyuk and Hye Jin to get Sung Joon home (everyone seems to be getting drunk senseless this week).
The best parts of this week’s showing happened in the last five minutes of episode 4.
When they both leave the unconscious Sung Joon’s house, Hye Jin flares at Shin Hyuk blaming him for always picking at her and getting her in trouble. Then Shin Hyuk tells Hye Jin he likes doing it because she reminds him of his younger sister.
Hye Jin is devastated at the news and at herself for getting Shin Hyuk all wrong.
We get a triple cliffhanger this week! So now we know why Shin Hyuk seemed so drawn to Hye Jin. Also, we find out who the mystery chaebol is!
And third, the master of all disasters happens when Hye Jin lets herself back into Sung Joon’s apartment to get her lost phone. She gets startled by the now revived Sung Joon, breaks his beloved framed puzzle with the missing piece, and gets tugged into his arms.
Whew! Next week had better deliver on all these mind-boggling developments. Looks like I’ll be tuning in for week 3!
There was one uh-oh moment though… Hye Rin fishing Sung Joon’s card from her bag and remembering he asked her to call him, promising he’d buy her nice things to eat. I didn’t like the look in her eye when she decides to take him up on his offer soon…
Meanwhile, had a laugh seeing her wearing a face mask and diligently exercising in bed. Almost like she’s keeping a stringent beauty routine, afraid to end up like her older sister?? Haha, have to admit, episode 3 and 4 of She Was Pretty delivered on entertainment if not satisfaction. Maybe we’ll get that next week. Fingers crossed.
