2016 Kdrama Catchup: July

kim-woo-bin-uncontrollably fond

I feel you, dude. Waiting on those new episodes each week can be such a drag!

Well, okay. I like how my July watch-list is looking. I’m all for quality over quantity, so I’m not trying to juggle too much at once. The more the feel-good factor, the more I’m inclined to tune in week after week. And three main dramas are giving me major good vibes at the moment. And it’s from the most unexpected of angles!

Two big-name dramas, with two outstanding story-lines that keep you guessing, and one swaggering sageuk with a delightfully unconventional heroine. Figured out which three dramas I’m so keen about? Continue reading “2016 Kdrama Catchup: July”

Sageuk Spotlight: Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart: Goryeo

And it’s a wrap! Moon Lovers is done with filming and premieres August 29. Who else can’t wait!?

Much as I’ve tried to distance myself from too much information about this upcoming period drama, I’m not sure I can hold back any longer. This looks so good!

Yes, even though I’d like to keep my mind a blank page, open to enjoy Moon Lovers on its own benefit alone…I do allow myself some little tidbits just to whet my keen appetite for this beautifully shot piece.

So what makes this upcoming drama something to really look forward to?

It’s Lee Joon Gi’s new drama!
If you love Lee Joon Gi in sageuk, in costume, and in a badass lead role, then this drama is so for you!

Top 3 June Upcoming Dramas

Eye-catching poster from upcoming thriller “Wanted”

Goodness me! This time last month I felt I was swimming in dramas. Now I’m starting to wonder if there’s anything new to hook me this June. Let’s see shall we?

Of all the dramas premiering this June, which ones look promising, and which look like you might want to watch? Trust me, there’s a huge difference.

Top Pick: Beautiful Mind starring Jang Hyuk and Park So Dam
So what’s the top pick for someone like me who’s so picky about dramas to watch? Much as June dramas have some of the biggest names we’ve seen in one season, they don’t really tickle my fancy, alas. That’s just me though.

With Beautiful Mind, we have an interesting mix with our two main cast. Jang Hyuk and Park So Dam might pull a surprise, and give us some chart-topping chemistry.

That aside, this drama has a scintillating premise that needs to be in the hands of the right team to make it pop. The drama is the kind that can only go to two extremes: very good or very bad – no middle ground. I really hope it’s the former, because I like both Jang Hyuk and Park So Dam individually. Maybe this drama will get me to like them both together.

Begins June 20 and its a medical thriller, with some mystery and romance. Juicy stuff.

He’s a genius neurosurgeon psychopath. She is a detective in the violent crimes division. Let’s see how that amazing conflict situation works out for them!

38 Task Force aka Police Unit 38 starring Ma Dong Sook and Seo In Guk (and Soo Young)
When it comes to police units in dramas, I’ll say I’ve come across a few, one namely the violent crimes unit in Hidden Identity (Kim Bum) and then in Hello Monster (Seo In-Guk plays a genius profiler).

In Police Unit 38, Seo In-guk again gets to play in a similar police procedural role. The main difference is this is a blend of crime and humor. Well bring on the killer gags!

38 Task Force (literal title) gives us another unique premise to look forward to. A con man and a chief of a revenue collection police unit, work hand in hand to take down tax evaders. Looks like a match made in comedy heaven.

Begins June 17 (today!), where we see our special police unit try to use a criminal’s own tactics of deceit and scams, to catch wealthy tax cheats. A thief to catch a thief? Talk about winning strategy!

Good cops and bad criminals…Just don’t call it a mismatch – call it methodical genius!

Wanted starring Kim Ah Joong, Uhm Tae Woong and Ji Hyun Woo
Another top pick, this drama has so much potential for thrills and chills. Especially when kidnapping is involved.

“Wanted” is about a top Korean actress whose son has been kidnapped. In exchange, the kidnapper has the weirdest demands, which the heroine will struggle to accomplish on live reality TV. No pressure at all then.

Begins June 22 and promises to be a thriller and a horror. Looking forward to that and more.

Wanted_(Korean_Drama)-p3 Wanted_(Korean_Drama)-p2

Some of the coolest promo posters I’ve seen this year. Hope the drama lives up to expectation!

Many other great dramas started earlier this month, while these are my top 3 anticipated for the remainder of June. There’s also Doctors starring Park Shin Ye which is starting to perk my interest enough to be on my ‘iffy watchlist’.

Also titled “Doctor’s Crush”, it has an interesting enough premise. Once a tough school bully, Yoo Hye Jung learns to keep her heart shut from emotions and people.

Then she meets Hong Ji Hong, who becomes her mentor and through whom she transforms from lost-soul gangster to compassionate doctor.

Clearly one heck of a turnaround, one I may just have to tune in to witness…

Begins June 20 and boasts a talented crop of actors who just might offer more than just star power. Let’s see how it goes!
